Is it really that important for us men to put the toilet seat down? We use the bathroom more then you women and therefore, shouldn't WE deserve to have the toilet seat left up? And really, how many of you have actually fallen into the toilet like you claim, due to the toilet seat left up at night?
** UPDATE ** Sam has requested the following diagram and write-up be added:

I worked up this diagram to illustrate my point.
When men arrive at the toilet, if the seat is left in position A, no change is required. When women arrive, they will already be heading to position B, so they can easily take the toilet seat with them.
If on the other hand the seat is always left in position B, then each time a man arrives at the toilet, the seat will have to travel distance C twice- both before and after urination. As Ammon points out, a lot of needless movement. Most likely the result will be that the travel from B to A will not occur and drippage will be the result. An unfortunate reality we all live with.
** UPDATE ** Sam brings up a good point. Seat would be the thing you sit on. Lid would be that which covers the seat.

Urinals are just for you. Household toilets are shared. Men should put the lid down out of respect to other family members. Putting the seat down is like closing the door when you leave the house.
And yes, when we were first married, I went to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and fell into the toilet. I am so glad you've learned over the years to respect me.
So if this holds true, given a house that has a large number of males, would it be fair to assume the respect would be given to the males of the house?
Wow. It has finally been said.
No in my house, we leave the whole thing closed, so it isn't an issue. (that is true equality). But I have never understood this issue.
As a man, if I walk in and it is down, I lift it up, do my business, and put it back down. Why can't a woman do the opposite? In fact, they are already headed in that direction, it is less effort to just take the seat with them while they are headed down. Right?
There is a storm brewing...
Can we clarify LID vs SEAT? Its important.
Spammon - in a house full of men, it would be best to get an actual urinal to keep the mom aka maid from getting pissy.
Sam - sometimes we all have to make sacrifices. Men should just give in and make this one for us women.
lindsey - So you are saying we can get a urinal in the bathroom?
sam - We live in a true equality home as well. The lid is always closed. But you do bring a good point as to the ease of the toilet. Just let it be where it lands then? Perhaps we should all have tolerance for others personal toilet seat preference?
Jon says that if he can check when he has to sit, so can I. He DOES have a point...annoying when that happens.
I've fallen in a few times. I curse us both.
It's simple math. Women use it in one position 100% of the time. Men use it in that same position at least a fraction of the time which means that a majority of the time, this is the correct position and thus should be placed in that position in between uses.
I really think everyone should put both the seat AND lid down when they're done. I also think when somebody is done rifling through my medicine cabinet they should slide the (mirrored/on a track/split down the middle) doors shut again instead of leaving one side open, but that's just me.
Ohh I agree with Jules here about the seat AND lid... I have cats who just LOVE to dip their paws in any unknown liquid they can find...
Ha! Jules comment cracked me up...but that's just me.
If men would just pee sitting down it would solve all our problems!
I too think the best option is just lid down. That way you open up lid and/or seat, do your business, flush, close the lid and everyone is happy and equal.
So the lid and seat should be closed then. I suppose this also fixes the problem of seeing an unflushed toilet and other unsightly floaties that have been left in the toilet.
I'm also going to suggest a commercial toilet seat with the front middle part cut out. This way, we can pee standing up and avoid any drippy drippy on the seat.
lindsey - You and my Mom must think alike. I grew up in a house full of boys (6 + Dad)...so being the only female, she had urinals installed. Problem solved.
Who said boys use the toilet more then girls? I thought the exact opposite! And I, too, have fallen into a toilet bowl due to a lid being left up in the middle of the night!!!! (of course that was back in my skinnier days when my ass actually fit in the toilet!)
So everyone leaves the lid and seat down? Such a quick consensus. I thought Corbie would want to split the seat and leave half of it down sometimes.
Troy is forgetting something. Men are pigs. Troy's mom put two urinals in their house and the boys (all of them) didn't even bother to flush the darn thing! That's worse than in the toilet. Dried pee on the back of the urnial, and the rest left stagnant in a little pool of water. Disgusting.
As we girls had our own bathroom growing up, I never thought about this issue much until I got married. My husband was actually the one who got on my case about leaving the lid up. I have since changed my ways and put the lid down, so both the lid and seat are always down. Now to figure out which way the toilet paper is supposed to face!!!
Wait, did Spam say men use the bathroom more than women?
are you talking fequency or duration?
while my wife isn't one to bring the newspaper, a novel, a textbook, and a blackberyy so you can play "brickbreaker", she is one to make 700 trips per day.
